Ribbed Celtic Cable Scarf

Legend Translation:

Top Cable Symbol:

  • 1, 2 and 3, 4 stitches are moved to the cable needle respectively. (1,2和3,4针分别移到麻花针上)
  • 5, 6 stitches are knitted on top. (5,6织下针在最上)
  • 3, 4 stitches are knitted at the bottom. (3,4织下针在最下)
  • 1, 2 stitches are knitted in the middle. (1,2织下针在中间)
    • This describes a complex 6-stitch cable (2 over 2 over 2) where stitches 5 and 6 are crossed to the front, stitches 1 and 2 are crossed to the back, and stitches 3 and 4 remain in the middle, all worked in knit stitches. It forms a kind of basketweave or stacked cable effect.

Second Cable Symbol:

  • 1, 2 and 3, 4 stitches are moved to the cable needle respectively. (1,2和3,4针分别移到麻花针上)
  • 5, 6 stitches are knitted at the bottom. (5,6织下针在最下)
  • 3, 4 stitches are knitted at the bottom. (3,4织上针在最下) – Correction: 3,4织上针在最下 means “3,4 are purled at the bottom.” This indicates a purl stitch.
  • 1, 2 stitches are knitted on top. (1,2织下针在最上)
    • This also describes a 6-stitch cable, but the crossing order is different, and crucially, stitches 3 and 4 are purled. It’s 1,2 crossed to the front, and 5,6 held in back, with 3,4 remaining in the middle and purled.

Basic Stitches:

  • [|] …下针 (xiàzhēn) – Knit stitch
  • [—] …上针 (shàngzhēn) – Purl stitch

  4. Is this a double knit scarf knit in two colors? It seems odd to me that one chart is showing odd numbered rows and the other is showing even numbered rows! Very confusing!

  5. This pattern seems to be reprinted and translated to Chinese.
The original is pattern D of Japanese book “裏も楽しい手編みのマフラー”. (ISBN:978-4-579-11321-7)
Unfortunately the electronic book is not published so you need efforts to read it.
Japanese patterns are written with the letters regulated by Japanese Industrial Standards.
